Executives of the Upper East Region Old Footballers Association have appealed to the Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Football Association (GARFA), Samuel Aboabire, popularly known as Katar, to support efforts to revive and strengthen football development in the region by establishing an Old Footballers League.
The former footballers paid a courtesy call on Mr. Aboabire at his office in Accra on Wednesday, 29th July 2026, where they congratulated him on his leadership and contributions to Ghana football administration.
The visit was also aimed at deepening collaboration between former footballers from the Upper East Region and football administrators while promoting unity in sport.
The delegation, led by the Association’s Welfare Officer, George Anaba, included Organiser Abdul-Mumin Haruna and Deputy Organiser Shuraj Muntari.
They commended Mr. Aboabire, who hails from the Upper East Region, for his leadership role in transforming football administration in the Greater Accra Region and his contribution as a member of the Black Stars Management Committee.
The former players praised his commitment to football development and urged him to extend his support towards their initiative to establish an Old Footballers League in the Upper East Region, which they believe will provide a platform for retired players to remain active, mentor young talents and preserve the region’s football heritage.
In response, Mr. Aboabire expressed gratitude for the recognition and praised former footballers for their continued contribution to the country’s football ecosystem.
He noted that retired players remain important stakeholders whose experience, mentorship and advocacy are essential to nurturing the next generation of footballers.
Mr. Aboabire encouraged the association to strengthen collaboration with the Upper East Regional Football Association, led by Chairman Alhaji Salifu Zidah, to ensure that initiatives aimed at developing football in the region receive the necessary support.
Reaffirming his commitment to working with football stakeholders across the country, the GARFA Chairman said experienced football personalities have a crucial role to play in shaping the future of the game.
As a gesture of support towards the proposed Old Footballers League, Mr. Aboabire presented the association with Ashlid Sports-branded footballs to assist the initiative.
The engagement ended with both sides pledging to work together to promote football development, strengthen stakeholder relations and create opportunities for former players to contribute to the growth of the sport in the Upper East Region and Ghana as a whole.
