The intervention of the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga East, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has helped pave the way for the rehabilitation of five fire-damaged rooms at the Zuarungu Nursing and Midwifery Training College (ZNMTC), nearly a year after the facility was destroyed by fire.
The affected section of the girls’ dormitory was on Monday, August 24, 2026, formally handed over to Firm Stephot Ltd to commence rehabilitation works following the mobilisation of GH¢500,000 from the College, the MP and other supporting stakeholders.
Principal of ZNMTC, Mr. Haruna Tirah, said the rehabilitation became possible after Dr. Ayine responded to the College’s appeal and committed GH¢250,000 towards restoring the facility.
According to Mr. Tirah, the MP, upon hearing about the College’s predicament, visited his office and assured management of his support to rehabilitate the damaged dormitory.
He said Dr. Ayine has since honoured the promise, while additional support from the Zuarungu Chief’s Palace, the College and other stakeholders has helped raise the total amount required to commence the rehabilitation.
Mr. Tirah disclosed that the College itself has contributed GH¢200,000, while other donations amounting to GH¢42,000 have also been mobilised towards the project.
The Principal said the immediate priority was to restore the five rooms to provide accommodation for students as the College prepares to receive students for the new academic period.
The development follows concerns over the prolonged delay in restoring the dormitory, which was badly damaged by fire nearly a year ago.
A previous report by A1 Radio indicated that about 120 female students were affected by the accommodation challenge following the fire, which destroyed rooms and students’ personal belongings.
The Bolgatanga East District Assembly had earlier estimated that about GH¢1.2 million would be required to reconstruct the damaged section, excluding furnishing.
A separate assessment by the Architectural and Engineering Services Limited (AESL) reportedly estimated the cost at approximately GH¢1.6 million, including beds and other essential furnishings.
However, rather than wait indefinitely for the larger reconstruction funding, the College and its stakeholders have mobilised resources to undertake the immediate rehabilitation of the affected rooms.
Contractor for the project, Dennis Anaba of Firm Stephot Ltd, has given the College a five-week deadline for completion of the rehabilitation.
He said the works would include re-plastering, replacement of windows and doors, and other associated works required to restore the damaged section.
The current rehabilitation, however, does not include the provision of beds, re-building the whole structure, and other furnishings.
Mr. Anaba assured management that his outfit would work within the agreed time-frame to complete the project and hand the facility back to the College for use.
Management focus according to the Principal will be to ensuring that the contractor meets the five-week deadline and that the restored rooms are made available to students as soon as possible.
