The National Union of Tricycle Operators of Ghana (NUTOG) in the Upper East Region is demanding speedy and fair justice for its member, Akolbila Akolbire Blessing, popularly known as Jah Bless, who was allegedly murdered at Dulugu in the Bolgatanga East District.
Jah Bless, a registered NUTOG member, operated a tricycle at Dulugu and was reportedly working to support his family when he was killed.
Addressing the media at the Jubilee Park in Bolgatanga, Upper East Regional Chairman of NUTOG, Yakubu Ayamga, described the incident as barbaric and cowardly.
He said no one has the right to take another person’s life, while condemning murder, jungle justice and attacks on tricycle operators who are engaged in legitimate work.
NUTOG commended the Ghana Police Service, particularly the Bolgatanga East District, Bolgatanga Municipal and Upper East Regional Police Commands, for the swift arrest of suspects in connection with the case.
According to the union, the suspects are currently in custody and the matter is before the court.
Mr Ayamga appealed to NUTOG members across the region to remain calm and resist any attempt to take the law into their own hands.
He said the union believes in the rule of law and would not allow the death of Jah Bless to trigger chaos or disturbances in the region.
NUTOG is demanding speedy and fair justice, adequate compensation and support for the bereaved family, as well as improved security for tricycle operators across the Upper East Region.
The union also pledged to support the bereaved family during the funeral and burial of Jah Bless.
NUTOG said tricycle operations have become an important part of the region’s transport system, providing employment for thousands of young people and facilitating the movement of passengers and goods.
The union is therefore calling on the Upper East Regional Minister, traditional authorities, the media and residents to support its call for justice.
NUTOG says Jah Bless must not die in vain, while urging all parties to remain calm and respect the rule of law.
