The Women in Broadcast, Upper East Region, has secured GH¢38,000 in support to provide essential educational materials to vulnerable children ahead of the new academic year.
The support, from the Happy Man Foundation and Friends of Prosper, will provide exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, school shoes and school bags for children in deprived and hard-to-reach communities across the region.
The Happy Man Foundation has committed GH¢18,000 towards the purchase of exercise books and other stationery, while Friends of Prosper has pledged GH¢20,000 to provide school shoes and an additional 100 school bags.
The intervention builds on a similar initiative undertaken by the Women in Broadcast last year, when the group distributed more than 3,000 exercise books and pens across five districts in the Upper East Region.
President of Women in Broadcast, Upper East Region, Humul Khrusum Tahiru, said the experience exposed the difficulties some children face in accessing basic items required for schooling.
She said several children were found attending school without proper footwear and school bags, prompting the group to expand this year’s intervention.
“Last year during our donation exercise, we identified a number of children that came to school without shoes or even good shoes and school bags.”
Ms Tahiru said Friends of Prosper responded to the group’s appeal with GH¢20,000 for the purchase of shoes and an additional 100 school bags.
She also expressed appreciation to the Happy Man Foundation for taking responsibility for the books and stationery component of the intervention.
According to her, the GH¢18,000 support will be used to purchase exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers and sharpeners for distribution to selected beneficiaries.
“We would make sure that we spend every amount of the money given to us judiciously,” she assured.
The Women in Broadcast says the beneficiaries will be selected from vulnerable communities, particularly areas where families face difficulties in providing basic educational materials for their children.
Ms Tahiru said the group will also use its media platforms to inform the public about the distribution exercise and provide details of the districts and schools selected to benefit.
The group has meanwhile appealed to other individuals and organisations it previously contacted for support to temporarily hold on to their contributions.
Ms Tahiru said the group intends to return to those potential partners after completing the current exercise to seek support for other community interventions.
The Women in Broadcast is a women’s advocacy group that promotes women’s participation and visibility in the media while advocating for equal opportunities for women, children, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
The group says the latest intervention forms part of its broader commitment to using its media influence to draw attention to the needs of vulnerable people and support initiatives that improve their wellbeing.
