The Upper East Region is among 10 regions selected to benefit from the government’s plan to construct new secondary schools as part of a major investment aimed at improving access to quality education across Ghana.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, announced that one new secondary school will be built in the Upper East Region to help address infrastructure deficits and expand educational opportunities in underserved communities.
The initiative forms part of a nationwide education infrastructure programme that also includes the rehabilitation of 150 existing secondary schools, the upgrading of 30 Category C schools to Category B, the upgrading of 20 Category B schools to Category A, and the procurement of furniture for all beneficiary institutions.
According to Dr. Forson, the 10 new secondary schools will be strategically distributed across the Western, Western North, Greater Accra, Volta, Oti, Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Savannah, and Central Regions to improve access to secondary education where the need is greatest.
He explained that the project is expected to benefit approximately 2.3 million students, more than 100,000 teachers, and about 2,000 school leaders nationwide upon completion.
The Finance Minister noted that the investment is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen human capital development by providing modern educational facilities that will equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed for national development.
He further stated that the project will support the government’s efforts to eliminate the double-track system, improve learning outcomes particularly in Mathematics and Science, and create a more conducive teaching and learning environment.
Dr. Forson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the equitable distribution of educational infrastructure across the country, emphasizing that the inclusion of the Upper East Region reflects efforts to provide quality education to every Ghanaian child, regardless of location.
The announcement was made during the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, where the Finance Minister outlined the government’s economic performance and key policy priorities for the remainder of the year.
