The Dean of the School of Public Health a at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), Prof. James Akazili, has called for deliberate investment in science, technology and innovation to accelerate Ghana’s development.
He says countries that have made significant development gains have consciously invested in science and related disciplines to strengthen innovation, productivity and economic growth.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Prof. Akazili said Ghana must move beyond discussions about science and commit resources to developing the institutions, skills and innovations needed to transform the economy.
“If you look at countries that have development, they deliberately embark on science and innovation. A country’s development falls back heavily on its conscious investment in science and its related courses to improve growth,” he said.
Prof. Akazili was speaking on the topic “The Future of Science and Technology Education in the Upper East Region: The Role of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences.”
He said stakeholders must deliberately invest in science-related innovations capable of addressing the country’s development challenges.
According to him, universities have a critical role to play in equipping young people with the scientific and technological skills needed to develop practical solutions to problems confronting communities and the wider economy.
His comments come as UTAS continues to position itself as an institution focused on technology, applied sciences and innovation.
In 2025, UTAS was ranked the 10th-best university in Ghana based on its H-Index in the AD Scientific Index global ranking of higher education institutions.
The university maintained the position in 2026 before moving up to 8th position in the 2027 ranking, according to the ranking cited.
Prof. Akazili believes such developments reinforce the need for sustained investment in science and technology education, particularly in the Upper East Region.
He said strengthening science education and research could help create a generation of innovators capable of developing home-grown solutions while contributing to country’s broader economic transformation.
