The Gurene language has been officially approved by the government as a Ghanaian language for teaching and examination in schools, paving the way for learners to study the language from Kindergarten through Senior High School.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed Municipal and District Education Directorates in the Upper East Region to begin preparations for the implementation of Gurene in schools.
In a letter dated September 7, 2026, the Upper East Regional Education Office asked education directors to take the necessary steps to ensure the smooth introduction of the language into the school system.
According to the Upper East Regional Director of Education, Razak Abdul-Korah, the Director of Schools and Instructions had, in a letter dated January 29, 2026, instructed the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to include Gurene among the subjects available for registration for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The development means Gurene could soon become examinable at the national level, with the Regional Education Office indicating that candidates sitting the 2027 BECE are expected to form the first cohort to be examined in Gurene.
The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has also developed the curriculum framework, syllabi and teaching and learning materials required to support the teaching of Gurene from Kindergarten through Senior High School.
The GES has therefore tasked Municipal and District Education Directors to incorporate Gurene into school timetables and ensure that appropriate teachers are identified, rationalised and deployed to schools.
The directors have also been asked to take all other necessary measures to ensure effective teaching and learning of the language.
The Regional Education Office says the directive requires urgent attention to ensure schools are adequately prepared for both the teaching and eventual examination of Gurene.
The introduction of Gurene into the formal education system is expected to strengthen the teaching, preservation and development of the language while giving learners an opportunity to acquire formal literacy in their indigenous language.
The directive was also copied to the President of the Gurene Language Development Association (GULDA).
