The District Chief Executive for the Bongo District, Diana Asoketarige Ayamga, has handed over 2,988 birds under the government’s Nkoko Nkitikiti Initiative to poultry farmers in the district.
The distribution was carried out on behalf of the President of the Republic of Ghana and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) as part of the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Food Security Response in Northern Ghana Project.
The project is being implemented in 12 communities across the Bongo District, and it includes both crop and livestock components aimed at improving household livelihoods, strengthening food security, increasing agricultural productivity, and enhancing the incomes of farming households.
Under the livestock component, 18 beneficiaries in each participating community are expected to receive 50 birds each to establish or expand their poultry enterprises. The intervention is expected to increase local poultry production and provide beneficiary households with sustainable sources of income.
The first consignment of the birds was successfully distributed to beneficiaries in the Gowrie, Dua, Akutabongo–Adaboya, and Beo-Sapooro communities.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, Diana Asoketarige Ayamga encouraged the beneficiaries to take proper care of the birds to ensure the success and long-term sustainability of the project.
She advised the farmers to provide the birds with adequate feed, suitable housing, clean water, and proper veterinary care while adopting effective disease prevention measures.
The DCE reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting farmers through practical agricultural interventions that improve food production, strengthen food security, and promote economic empowerment, particularly among rural households.
She noted that the government, through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and its development partners, would continue to implement programmes aimed at improving farmers’ livelihoods and promoting sustainable agricultural development.
Diana Asoketarige Ayamga also commended the Department of Agriculture in the Bongo District for its role in coordinating and facilitating the successful implementation of the project.
She expressed confidence that the initiative would significantly improve the livelihoods of beneficiary households, increase poultry production, and support agricultural growth across the district.
The Nkoko Nkitikiti Initiative is expected to create additional income opportunities for farmers while contributing to improved nutrition, food security, and economic development in the Bongo District.
