A total of 527,932 candidates have been successfully placed into Senior High Schools, Senior High Technical Schools and technical and vocational institutions under the 2026 Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).
The figure represents about 87.3 percent of the 604,567 candidates who qualified for placement.
Announcing the results, Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, said 623,072 candidates sat the 2026 BECE, representing an increase of 19,744 over the 603,328 candidates recorded in 2025.
Dr Apaak explained that although there are enough vacancies across the various categories of schools, the major challenge is the mismatch between candidates’ preferred schools and the available vacancies.
He said Category A schools recorded 313,283 first-choice selections, against declared vacancies of 76,417.
Category B schools received 176,614 first-choice selections, with 250,366 vacancies, while Category C schools recorded 123,577 first-choice selections against 468,652 vacancies.
According to Dr Apaak, the figures demonstrate that the challenge is largely concentrated around highly subscribed schools rather than an overall shortage of places.
He urged candidates who were not automatically placed to consider other schools and programmes with available vacancies through the self-placement process.
Of the 527,932 candidates successfully placed, 276,521 are females and 251,411 are males.
Dr Apaak said the government has also expanded opportunities for candidates through the participation of 85 private Senior High Schools and Senior High Technical Schools in the Free SHS programme for the 2026/2027 academic year.
