The Assembly Member for the Sheaga Electoral Area in the Talensi District, Augustine Mmi-oni Guure, has questioned the District Assembly’s development priorities, particularly its handling of education infrastructure and budget allocations.
Mr Guure, who is also the NDC Constituency Secretary for Talensi and an aspiring Constituency Chairman, says his primary responsibility as an elected representative is to push for projects that directly improve the lives of residents.
He cited the poor condition of the Sheaga KG as one of the issues he has repeatedly raised with the Assembly.
According to him, the facility had previously been captured for rehabilitation under the former District Chief Executive and Coordinating Director but was later left out of subsequent budget discussions.
He says the situation is particularly worrying because the area is surrounded by major mining activities, yet some basic infrastructure remains in poor condition.
Mr Guure also raised concerns about schools across the Talensi District that were damaged by rainstorms.
He said several affected communities have had to rely on community support to restore damaged school facilities, while he has not seen adequate provision in the Assembly’s budget to address the problem.
He questioned some of the Assembly’s proposed expenditure priorities, including an estimated GH¢1.5 million allocation for changing a fence around the Coordinating Director’s residence.
Mr Guure argues that such resources could instead be used to construct or rehabilitate classrooms in deprived communities.
He also questioned proposed allocations for two laptops estimated at GH¢40,000 and the procurement of two motorbikes, demanding greater clarity on the specifications and justification for such expenditures.
“These questions we keep asking. And we are asking because we want development for our people,” he said.
Mr Guure says his criticism is not motivated by personal interest but by his responsibility to represent residents.
He recalled growing up in the community under difficult circumstances, saying those experiences have shaped his determination to speak for people who may not otherwise have a voice.
He believes local politics must focus on tangible development, accountability and opportunities for young people.
As he campaigns to become NDC Constituency Chairman, Mr Guure says he intends to make grassroots development and accountability central to his leadership agenda.
He insists that his commitment to raising difficult questions will continue regardless of opposition or intimidation.
