A Public Health Nurse, Mrs Susana Atanga, has called on nurses and other health professionals to give patients their full attention during consultations by maintaining eye contact, offering emotional support, and reducing the use of mobile phones while on duty.
Speaking during a health sector engagement, Mrs Atanga stressed that effective communication between health workers and patients is essential to quality healthcare delivery.
She said patients feel more respected, valued, and confident when healthcare providers pay attention to them and actively listen to their concerns.
According to her, nurses should maintain eye contact with patients during interactions, show empathy, and provide the necessary support throughout their visit to health facilities.
Mrs Atanga expressed concern over the excessive use of mobile phones by some health workers while attending to patients, noting that the practice can distract healthcare providers, reduce the quality of care, and negatively affect the patient experience.
She therefore urged all health personnel to minimize the use of mobile phones during working hours, except where they are needed for official duties or emergency situations.
She emphasized that professionalism, compassion, and effective communication are key to delivering quality healthcare and building trust between health workers and the communities they serve.
Mrs Atanga encouraged nurses and other healthcare professionals to remain focused on patient care and uphold the highest standards of ethics and professionalism, ensuring that every patient receives respectful, attentive, and compassionate care.
