The Managing Director of Kacstones Records, Wenawome Duriyem Aborah, has cautioned against commercial interests taking precedence over the protection and well-being of young people, particularly in the promotion of products linked to substance abuse.
He said some companies continue to pursue corporate profits without sufficient regard for the impact of their activities on young people, despite existing laws restricting the promotion of certain products.
“We cannot allow commercial interests to take precedence over the well-being of our young people,” Mr Aborah said.
He was speaking at the launch of the 5th Upper East Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards in Bolgatanga, where Kacstones Records was announced as one of the main sponsors of the event.
Mr Aborah expressed concern that influential individuals and institutions sometimes organise competitions and activities that indirectly promote products that could expose young people to harmful substances.
He therefore called on leaders and relevant institutions to enforce existing laws and put the protection of young people ahead of corporate interests.
“Our people cannot become the price we pay for their corporate profits,” he stressed.
Mr Aborah also urged journalists to remain resolute in the discharge of their duties, despite political, financial and other pressures that could compromise professional integrity.
He said communities continue to depend on the media to investigate wrongdoing, raise concerns and advocate for issues affecting their welfare.
He further challenged journalists in the Upper East Region to use their platforms to promote the region’s tourism and cultural resources, describing these as untapped opportunities capable of contributing to local development.
He called for stronger collaboration among the media, businesses, traditional authorities and public institutions to address substance abuse while promoting the region’s cultural and tourism potential.
Kacstones Records and the Paga Youth Movement are the main sponsors of the 5th Upper East Regional GJA Awards, scheduled for October 2, 2026.
The awards are being held under the theme: “Beyond the Headlines: The Media’s Role in Promoting WASH for Safe Motherhood and Quality Healthcare.”
