The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Officer for the Upper East Region, Jonathan Abdullah Salifu, has described the 2026 mid-year budget review presented by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson as evidence that the government is fulfilling the mandate given to it by Ghanaians.
According to him, the budget demonstrates a clear improvement in economic management, particularly in the area of government expenditure and financial discipline.
Speaking on the budget presentation, Mr Salifu said he was impressed with the Finance Minister’s explanation of the difference between financial releases and actual cash availability, a distinction he believes settles recent debates surrounding government funding to institutions.
“I am happy yesterday he gave a breakdown of releases. You look at the figures, I think it looks very good. That is what Ghanaians voted for,” he said.
He explained that while funds may have been released to ministries and agencies, accessing the money requires institutions to follow necessary processes, insisting that the government has not abandoned its responsibilities.
Mr Salifu argued that the performance of the current administration should be assessed against previous governments, particularly the immediate past New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
“Until we get another government that will come and do better than what President Mahama and his government is doing, I think so far President Mahama is the best,” he stated.
He said the economic indicators announced by the Finance Minister, including growth projections, inflation targets, and the primary surplus, showed that the country was moving in the right direction.
However, he acknowledged that some sectors, particularly agriculture, still require attention following concerns raised by farmers over low produce prices and high production costs.
Mr Salifu said although consumer concerns over food prices have improved, government must now focus on addressing farmers’ challenges.
“If you are able to deal with half of a problem, you continue until you get the entire thing resolved. That is how we grow a country,” he added.
