The Upper East Regional Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jonathan Abdullah Salifu, has accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of avoiding a proper debate on the government’s mid-year budget review by focusing on issues outside the financial statement.
Mr Salifu said the budget presented by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson contained significant economic measures that deserved attention, arguing that attempts to shift discussions away from the document amounted to political distractions.
According to him, the Finance Minister’s presentation provided clear explanations on government revenue, expenditure, sectoral allocations, and financial releases.
He commended the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, for what he described as a balanced response to the budget, saying the experienced legislator avoided engaging in political exchanges and instead focused on explaining the government’s economic agenda.
“Experience matters. He understood the game. He said, you can do your propaganda politics, but we will talk about the budget,” Mr Salifu said.
The NDC communicator also praised the Finance Minister for what he described as responsible economic management, saying the current administration inherited a difficult financial situation but had begun restoring confidence.
He argued that indicators such as improved inflation projections, economic growth and the return of fiscal discipline demonstrated that government was making progress.
“Managing finances is all about discipline. The way you manage your house or business is the same way you manage Ghana’s resources,” he stated.
Mr Salifu further rejected criticisms from the Minority that the budget was empty, describing it as one of the best financial statements presented under the Fourth Republic.
He urged Ghanaians to assess the government based on measurable outcomes rather than political rhetoric.
