‘Chairman Wontumi’ jailed for 20 years over illegal mining

The Ashanti Regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Chairman Wontumi, has been sentenced to a 20-year jail term by an Accra High Court on Monday, July 20, 2026.

The businessman cum politician is being held over a case of illegal mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region that was raised against him by the state.

A leading member of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, Ing. Dr. Ken Ashigbey, in an interview with Joy FM and monitored by bolgafmonline.com, noted that the judgment is good news for the Coalition and prays that the state will go after all others whose names were mentioned in the Prof. Frimpong Report.

He called on the media not to relent in the fight against illegal mining, adding, “… this is an indication that our effort will yield results with time.”
