A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team in the Upper East Region, Celestina Atanga, has declared her intention to contest the position of Deputy Communications Officer in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency.
Ms Atanga says her decision is driven by what she describes as the limited representation of women in political communication, arguing that women must be given the opportunity to occupy leadership positions beyond the traditional roles often assigned to them within political parties.
She made the declaration when she appeared on Bolga FM’s political talk show, Zina Yela, on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
According to her, women who become actively involved in party politics are often encouraged to pursue positions such as Women’s Organiser, a trend she believes must change.
“I said, okay, I’m going to break from the norm. So, what I’m going to do is that I’ll go for communication. And I have seen that with that, I’ll grow in it and I’ll pull my other ladies along,” she said.
Ms Atanga said her ambition is not only to secure the Deputy Communications Officer position but to use the opportunity to encourage more women to enter political communication and build their capacity to participate effectively in political discourse.
She believes greater female participation in party communication will help broaden the voices and perspectives represented in political discussions.
Ms Atanga traced her involvement in NDC activities to her years with the JM Ladies, a pro-NDC women’s group, where she campaigned for then-presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama and the party’s parliamentary candidate for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo.
She said she and other members of the group mobilised support for the party across communities in the constituency, often relying on their personal resources to support campaign activities.
She later joined the NDC’s communication team in 2019, following encouragement from her mentor, Abdallah Salifu Jonathan, the Upper East Regional NDC Communications Officer.
Ms Atanga, who is among the few female voices within the NDC’s communication structure in the Upper East Region, was recently recognised by the Regional Communication Bureau during a capacity-building workshop for communicators.
She has consequently appealed to delegates in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency to support her candidature when nominations and elections are held.
The NDC is scheduled to open nominations for constituency executive positions on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 7:00 a.m., and close the process on Thursday, September 17, at 5:00 p.m.
The constituency executive elections are scheduled for Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, 2026, at designated venues within the respective constituencies.
Ms Atanga’s candidature adds another dimension to the upcoming constituency elections, with the participation and advancement of women in political communication emerging as a central part of her campaign.
