Residents of Gowrie Kunkua and Bongo Kunkua in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region have been without electricity since Friday, August 21, 2026, following a disconnection exercise by the VRA/NEDCO revenue mobilisation team.
The outage has left residents without power for days, with the communities attributing the disconnection to an unresolved dispute over what they describe as unusual electricity bills.Â
Assembly Member for the area, James Akuribila, says the billing concerns had earlier been reported to VRA/NEDCO, with residents expecting officials to visit the communities to investigate the matter.
Instead, he says, residents were surprised when the revenue mobilisation team arrived on Friday and began disconnecting electricity supplies.
Mr. Akuribila says power was subsequently cut off across the affected communities and has not been restored.
He says he later visited the VRA/NEDCO office to seek clarification and intervention.
According to him, officials explained that the team responsible for the exercise was in the field and that the matter would be communicated to them upon their return for the necessary action.
The prolonged outage has now raised concerns among residents, who say they are being made to bear the consequences of a billing issue they had already brought to the attention of the electricity provider.
Residents are calling for an urgent resolution of the billing concerns and the restoration of electricity to the two communities.
For now, Gowrie Kunkua and Bongo Kunkua remain without power, as residents await action from VRA/NEDCO.
