GhanaThink mobilises nationwide volunteer projects to mark National Volunteer Day

The GhanaThink Foundation has mobilised volunteers across the country to undertake community service projects as Ghana marks the 13th National Volunteer Day.

The initiative, being implemented through the Foundation’s flagship Ghana Volunteer Program, seeks to promote a culture of civic responsibility by encouraging citizens, particularly young people, to take action in addressing challenges within their communities.

The National Volunteer Day was established in 2013 with about 300 volunteers undertaking 40 community projects. It has since expanded into a multi-regional movement involving thousands of volunteers.

Co-founder and Director of the GhanaThink Foundation, Ato Ulzen-Appiah, says the initiative was designed not only to complete projects but to build a generation that understands leadership through service.

“We wanted to build a culture where young people across Ghana realize that leadership begins with service, and that true progress happens when ordinary citizens take the initiative to solve problems right where they live,” he said.

As part of this year’s activities, coordinated Konnect meetups were held in Accra, Tema, Takoradi, Cape Coast, Koforidua, Sunyani, Ho, Wa, Tamale, Bolgatanga and Kasoa.

The gatherings allowed volunteers to share experiences, build networks and plan community interventions.

Several projects have already been undertaken, including a sanitation drive along the Sagnarigu Highway, a medical outreach at the BAHASS Mental Home in Wa and the “Pints of Hope” national blood donation campaign.

Other interventions planned for the celebration include environmental action on climate change and recycling in Teshie, literacy support for more than 150 pupils at Ayeduase R/C School in Kumasi and a substance abuse sensitisation programme at Bolgatanga Central Technical School.

BolgaKonnect Administrator Raymond Ayinne said the Bolgatanga intervention will focus on helping young people understand the dangers of substance abuse and its connection to mental health.

“By addressing mental health and addiction early, we give our youth a real chance to thrive,” he said.

The Foundation is also encouraging citizens to see volunteering as an everyday responsibility through activities such as clean-up exercises, mentoring, blood donation, tree planting, supporting the elderly and offering professional services for free.

For GhanaThink, the emphasis is on turning volunteerism from an occasional activity into a sustained culture of community service.
