The District Chief Executive for the Bongo District Assembly, Diana Asoketarige Ayamga, has commended the Fisheries Commission, community leaders, and the Bongo Soe fish farming group for the successful implementation of the government’s Aquaculture for Food and Jobs Programme in the community.
Speaking during the community’s first tilapia harvest, Mrs. Ayamga expressed heartfelt appreciation to all stakeholders whose commitment and collaboration made the initiative a success.
The District Chief Executive described the project as a practical intervention that is creating employment opportunities, improving food security, and enhancing livelihoods in rural communities.
She said the 140kg harvest at Bongo Soe demonstrates what can be achieved when government programmes are well implemented at the community level.
Mrs. Ayamga appealed to the Fisheries Commission to extend the Aquaculture for Food and Jobs Programme to other communities in the Bongo District that have expressed interest in fish farming, particularly those with small and large water bodies that can support aquaculture activities.
“Expanding the initiative would increase fish production while creating sustainable employment opportunities for young people and women, thereby helping to reduce unemployment across the district.” She stated.
She further disclosed that the Bongo District Assembly is exploring ways to support communities without dams by providing water infrastructure that can facilitate fish farming and other agricultural activities.
“Employment is key to development. When our youth are engaged in productive ventures, they can earn income, support their families and contribute to the growth of their communities. Initiatives like fish farming can help reduce unemployment and improve living standards.” She said
Mrs. Ayamga also encouraged residents to embrace government-supported livelihood programmes and work together to ensure their sustainability for the benefit of future generations.
The successful tilapia harvest at Bongo Soe has been widely welcomed by residents and stakeholders, with many describing it as a model project that should be replicated in other communities to promote economic growth, food security, and youth empowerment.
Head of Prosperity City Chapel, also expressed joy over the success of the initiative and praised the quality of the harvested fish.
He described fish farming as an important venture that benefits both human health and community development, stressing that such projects deserve greater support to enable more communities to participate.
The AFJ Programme, launched in 2024 by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, provides beneficiary communities with fish fingerlings, feed, technical training, and extension services to boost aquaculture production nationwide.
