Disqualified New Patriotic Party (NPP) Upper East Regional Youth Organiser aspirant Samuel Akumbo has challenged the credentials of incumbent Salahu-Deen Musah, arguing that the latter would struggle to retain the position if delegates were allowed to vote in a competitive election.
Speaking on DreamzFM monitored by BolgaFM, he claimed Musah’s previous electoral performances within the party demonstrated that he was not politically invincible.
“I have followed him. Salahu-Deen Musah contested against a schoolgirl, Hannah Agana, and he was crying around. We came and salvaged him. We supported him to win,” he alleged.
He further claimed that during the 2022 regional executive elections, Musah nearly lost the Regional Youth Organiser contest and survived only because of support from party members who rallied behind him.
“If not for our support, he would have lost the contest,” he asserted.
He questioned why, in his view, the party appeared determined to shield Musah from another competitive race.
“Why are they protecting him? Why can’t they allow delegates to decide?” he asked.
His remarks follow the decision by the NPP Upper East Regional Elections Vetting Committee to disqualify three aspirants in the Youth Organiser race, leaving Musah as the sole qualified candidate.
The committee said the disqualifications were based on constitutional provisions and nomination requirements, while Musah’s switch from the Regional Secretary contest complied with party rules.
He maintained that democracy within the party would be strengthened, not weakened, by an open contest.
“If they believe he is that popular, then let us contest. Delegates know who they want,” he said.
Musah has publicly maintained that his decision to return to the Youth Organiser race was intended to reorganise and strengthen the party’s youth wing ahead of the 2028 general election.
