Former aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Upper East Regional Youth Organiser position, Samuel Akumbo Awintariba, says the posture of the newly elected regional leadership suggests they are not ready to unite with members who contested and lost the recent elections.
Speaking on A1 Radio monitored by BolgaFM, he said the conduct and attitude of the new leadership towards former contestants do not demonstrate a genuine commitment to reconciliation, a situation he says could affect the party’s cohesion ahead of the 2028 elections.
Mr Awintariba is, however, proposing a three-point guide to help rebuild unity within the party, with the youth wing taking the lead.
He wants youth organisers across the 15 constituencies to push for a post-election gathering that brings together the various contestants and supporters to reconnect, express their concerns and begin the process of healing after the contest.
He also wants the youth wing to demand honest accountability from the regional leadership, arguing that accountability is necessary to build trust and strengthen the party.
“From what I have seen, the new regional leadership is not ready for unity with the people who contested and lost,” he said.
Mr Awintariba further insists that unity must be driven from the Upper East Region rather than imposed from the party’s national headquarters in Accra.
“Unity won’t come from Accra. It must begin from the youth here, in the Upper East Region,” he said.
He maintained that losing a party contest should not lead to political disengagement, stressing that the NPP’s broader interest must take precedence over individual ambitions.
“I believe the party is greater than my personal interest. The fact that the mandate was not given to me does not mean that we should stay away from working for the interest of our presidential candidate,” he added.
