Regentropfen University College (RUC) has unveiled a package of academic initiatives, including new postgraduate programmes, the relaunch of its President’s Scholarship for female students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and an 18-month paid internship opportunity in Denmark, as part of efforts to produce industry-ready graduates and expand access to higher education.
The institution says the initiatives form part of its strategy to address Ghana’s skills shortages while creating alternative pathways for students who may not meet the traditional university entry requirements.
Speaking on A1 Radio, the Founder and President of Regentropfen University College, Rev. Dr. Moses Asaah Awinongya SVD, said the university had adopted a “people-centred” approach by designing programmes that respond directly to labour market demands.
“We are a people-centred university. We look at the needs of society and design programmes that provide practical solutions. Our focus is not just on awarding certificates but on producing graduates who can solve real problems,” he said.
As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, the university has relaunched the President’s Scholarship for Females, first introduced in 2022, to encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM and agriculture.
The scholarship covers 50 per cent of tuition fees for two academic years for eligible female students admitted to study BSc Agriculture for Social Change, B.Ed Mathematics with ICT, BSc Computer Science, and BSc Information Technology.
Rev. Dr. Awinongya said the scholarship honours two women whose contributions have shaped the university’s growth—Professor Agnes Atia Apusigah, the institution’s first female Vice President, and his late mother, Mama Alice Akankuba-Mah Abinglogro.
“Professor Agnes Atia Apusigah was the first female Vice President of our institution and also founded and funded the award for the best graduating female student,” he said.
He added that his late mother, despite never receiving formal education, remained committed to supporting young women to access higher education.
“Though she was not formally educated, she made sure young women came to Regentropfen and helped finance their education so they could build their future,” he said.
According to him, the university believes the legacy of the two women should continue by creating opportunities for more females to enter critical development fields.
“We feel it is important to encourage more women in agriculture, science, mathematics and technology,” he added.
The university has also introduced a special scholarship for students pursuing BSc Accounting, offering 60 per cent tuition support during the first two academic years and 40 per cent in the final two years.
Rev. Dr. Awinongya said the initiative responds to the persistent shortage of qualified accountants in the Upper East Region.
“Since 2015, we have struggled to find seasoned accountants, people who can analyse financial data and provide strategic leadership. This scholarship is our contribution to solving that challenge,” he noted.
Beyond scholarships, Regentropfen has expanded its postgraduate portfolio with the introduction of an MPhil in Aquaculture Technology, an MSc in Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education with specialisations in secondary education, nursing education, TVET and tertiary education.
The university has also strengthened its practical training by offering Agriculture for Social Change students an 18-month paid internship in Denmark through an international partnership, giving them hands-on experience in modern agricultural production before returning to Ghana.
To widen access to higher education, Rev. Dr. Awinongya said the university also offers diploma programmes that allow students who do not meet direct entry requirements in English, Mathematics or Integrated Science to progress to bachelor’s degrees instead of repeatedly sitting remedial examinations.
“We believe education should not end because someone misses the traditional entry requirements. The diploma pathway gives students another opportunity to achieve their academic and professional goals,” he said.
Located at Kansoe, Namoo in the Upper East Region, Regentropfen University College offers diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through its Faculties of Applied Sciences, Humanities and Health Sciences, with a growing emphasis on combining academic excellence, practical skills and international exposure to prepare graduates for national development.
