The Irrigation Company of Upper Region (ICOUR), with support from the Ghana Rice Production Improvement Project (GRIP), has commenced a capacity-building programme aimed at improving the quality and competitiveness of locally produced rice.
The training, which began at the Tono Irrigation Scheme, is targeting farmers within Water User Associations (WUAs) at No-5, No-6 and No-15 in the Gaani and Chuchuliga areas.
ICOUR says farmers from other WUAs are expected to benefit from similar training sessions in the coming weeks.
Speaking on the initiative, the Managing Director of ICOUR, Dr. Dominic Anarigide, said the programme is designed to equip farmers with practical skills that will enhance rice quality, while reducing production costs.
According to him, the training begins at the nursery stage and will continue through the entire production cycle, including harvesting and storage.
“The training emphasises the use of quality seeds, optimum input application, proper land preparation and effective control of weedy rice on paddy fields,” Dr. Anarigide explained.
He noted that improving production practices is critical if local rice producers are to compete effectively with imported rice brands that dominate Ghana’s markets.
A total of 200 farmers are expected to benefit from the programme.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen domestic rice production, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve market standards.
Dr. Anarigide expressed optimism that participants would adopt modern and efficient rice cultivation techniques capable of increasing yields and profitability.
He said the ultimate goal is to produce high-quality rice at a lower cost, enabling farmers under the Tono Irrigation Scheme to remain competitive and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s drive towards greater self-sufficiency in rice production.
